PlayStation Vita patent shows possible HDMI, USB ports

A newly discovered Sony patent shows the possibility of additional ports added to the PlayStation Vita.

The patent, found by Patent Bolt, hints at plans to include both an HDMI and micro USB port on the bottom of system.

It is possible that the patent is an indication of a system redesign for the Vita. However, it was originally filed in Japan in August 2011, suggesting that it may indicate an older design for the system prior to release.

Further support that it may simply be an unused design is the inclusion of a port for a power cable in addition to the existing expansion port. The current model of Vita systems have a single expansion port, which is used for charging the batteries as well as connecting the system to a PC or PS3 through USB.

The patent was republished by the United States Patent and Trademark Office on February 7, 2013.

While a system redesign appears unlikely, Sony recently hinted at a price cut for the Vita, along with saying the system needs more attractive software and better marketing.

The firm has previously hinted at a PlayStation Vita price reduction, which would be enforced in 2013.

Sony recently marked the one-year anniversary of the PlayStation Vita with a sale on PSN.
