The bad news is that if you're not already a BlackBerry user, there may not be enough to entice you to step across the floor and go BB. True, there are some legitimate appeals for business, particularly relating to security, but with some firms allegedly holding back on committing to BB just in case the firm goes belly up mid-contract, there's clearly still quite a bit of convincing and reassuring to do.

That's no bad thing in itself, but it's the swipe-based interface that marks it out as something else. BB refers to the system as "Flow", with the idea being that you flow between apps and pages, without hard back or home buttons to disturb the smoothness of the user experience.

You open the lock page by swiping up from the bottom of the screen, and can then brush right to left to reveal several pages of icons. When you want to come out of an app you slide up from the bottom again, and the app shrinks to an "Active Frame" (it'll show up to eight, four to a page) which you can then either close, or keep running so they're handy for later.

At the bottom of the screen when you're not in an app are three shortcuts, similar to the later Android layout, but this time it's phone, search and camera. There are some nice animated effects as one page of apps fades into the next as you scroll, which isn't terribly practical, but it does help it to look like a sophisticated, well thought out interface. Swiping down when you're within an app often gives you access to more menus or additional info. Counterintuitively, scrolling up when you're in the camera app won't switch it off -- you'll simply take a picture. To exit the camera you'll need to swipe from the left -- it's an unusual lapse in consistency that betrays just how new this system is.

It's all quite a leap from standard smartphone behaviour, and there's definitely a learning curve to get used to swiping in general, as well as its various subtleties. The browser is neat and easy to use, with slide-in menus available to both left and right when you need them. It's very fast too, and includes a Reader option, that pulls out the text from a webpage and lays it out in clear, ad and banner-free ebook style for easier perusal. Flash video capability is on board, even though the format is on the way out and Adobe has said it won't be doing any more upgrades -- but at least you shouldn't have any trouble viewing sites that still use it.

Cascades is BlackBerry's new navigation feature, which helps you to multitask without having to come out of the application you're in. I. Install the Toolkit and Drivers

2. Then select the SuperSU method to continue.


 


3. Then select clockworkmod recovery as your recovery image.


 


4. When it asks you if the device is in fastboot mode, unplug the device, turn it off, then turn it back on by holding down volume up, volume down, and power at the same time until it turns on, then plug it back in.



5. Type yes to continue. (*If you have issues getting fastboot drivers to install, head to TheUnlockr.com’s How To Root the Nexus 4 procedure for a tip on how to get them to install properly in the video on that page.)



6. On your device, use the volume buttons to select Yes and then the power button to choose it.



7. After that, the program will automatically continue to root the device.


 
8. Eventually, the device will reboot. Go through the setup process as you normally would (leaving it plugged in).

9. Enable USB Debugging again.

10. Wait patiently while the procedure continues.



11. Exit the program after it returns to the main menu.

III. Flash a Custom Kernel

1. Click here to download my favorite Kernel and save it to your computer’s desktop.


2. Plug your device in via USB cable.

3. Copy the kernel .zip file over to the root of your device’s storage.




4. Unplug the device, turn it off, and turn it back on by holding down volume up, volume down, and power at the same time until it boots into bootloader mode.


5. Push up on the volume key until you see recovery displayed. Push power to select it.
 

6. Once it boots in to recovery mode, select Install Zip from SD.


7. Select Choose Zip from SD.
 

8. Select the kernel .zip file and then select yes to confirm.
 


9. Hit Go Back until you get to the main recovery screen.
 

10.  Select Reboot System Now.
 

11. Once it reboots, you’re device is already undervolted by 100mv but we can push that a little bit to get a bit more out of it. Download Intellicontrol from the Play Store.

12. Pull the second slider all the way to the left to allow the processor to go to a much lower speed when idle.

13. Tap on the SVS tab at the top right and push the minus symbol to the left of All until the first value says 737500 (this is the lowest I would go but feel free to adjust this up and down based on your experience).

14. Scroll down and click the Apply button to save the changes. Enjoy the extra battery life! (I don’t recommend select Set on Boot simply because you could get stuck if the voltage is too low, so just redo steps 12 and 13 anytime you reboot your device. Trust me it’s safer this way).

*If you have an issue where the device won’t reboot properly or turns itself off, simply flash this file via recovery the same way you flashed the undervolted kernel to reset the kernel to stock and be able to reboot the device. 

IV. The Results

Using the Quadrant test found in the app store and LAPTOP’s own battery test here are the results we got before and after undervolting.
