Securing your Android Ice Cream Smartphone

While consumers might be able to make do with a simple PIN code to protect their Nexus 7 tablet, business users need to give a bit more thought to protecting their device.

Here's a rundown of what I did to protect my new Nexus 7.

Given the diversity of Android devices on the market, this information may or may not be applicable to other Android-powered devices.

All these options can be found under Security in the Settings app.

Screen lock

While using "Face Unlock" or a pattern to unlock the Nexus 7 might be convenient, neither offers the security of a PIN code or password.
Whichever you choose, consider six characters a minimum, and I would recommend bumping this up to eight or more if you carry sensitive information on your tablet.

Automatically lock

I set this to 5 seconds because this gives me a small window between the device going to sleep and it needing a password, bit not such a big one that it could be a vulnerability.
If you have sensitive information, then push this up to "Immediately".

Power button instantly locks

This is a no brainer. If I switch off the device, I want it locked immediately.

Encryption

Encrypting a tablet is quite a long process, but it's important if you want to make sure that the data on the device is safe from prying eyes. Encryption is the best way to make sure that all data you have on the tablet remains safe in the event of the tablet being lost or stolen.

Verify apps

You don't want any old junk installed on your BYOD or business tablet, so make sure that apps only come from reputable sources.

Other steps

Here are some other precautions that anyone using an Android tablet should take if it is being used in a business setting.
  • Install an antimalware app. Don't fall into the trap of thinking that Android — or, for that matter, any other platform — is invulnerable. Every little bit of protection helps.
  • If possible, pick an antimalware app that supports a "find your device" and remote wipe.
  • While it's not applicable to the Nexus 7, if you use external storage on your Android tablet — in the form on an SD card — then make sure that this is encrypted.
  • Don't root the device. While this is OK for consumers, it dramatically increases the attack surface, making it unwise in a business setting.

PC vs. Mac: What's the Best?

Want to start a fight between computer geeks? Bring up one simple question: PC or Mac?
Windows advocates will start accusing Mac users of being members of a fancy-pants cult. Mac fans will maintain that Windows users are the undiscerning owners of hunks of generic junk. It's a pretty undignified squabble, and both Microsoft and Apple egg it on via contentious TV ads.

Here, we recommend both Windows PCs and Macs all the time, and we use them both, too. The last computer we purchased was a thin-and-light Asus laptop running Windows 7; the one before that was a 15-inch MacBook Pro. When it comes time to buy a new machine, we consider both options. And if your budget permits, we recommend you do the same.

The PC-or-Mac debate has been raging for more than a quarter-century, but making sense of it requires considering the situation as it stands at one moment in time. Here's my take on things as of early 2010.

Cost

Venture into the computer department of a store like Best Buy, and you'll find scads of computers priced well under $1,000 and a handful for a grand or more. The former are almost all Windows machines, and many are respectable choices. The latter, however, are nearly all from Apple — hence the common perception that Macs are way overpriced.

Every time we do the math, though, we come to the conclusion that the cost of Macs isn't out of whack with that of similar Windows machines. Apple isn't selling $750 notebooks for $1,500 — its portables tend to use higher-end processors, mostly have aluminum cases rather than plastic ones, are typically thinner and lighter than garden-variety laptops and run longer on a battery charge than many of their Windows brethren. The Microsoft-powered laptops most directly comparable to Apple's MacBook Pro line, HP's Envy models, actually cost more than roughly equivalent Macs.

Another point to consider: All Macs come with Apple's excellent iLife suite, which provides tools for editing, organizing, and sharing photos, video, music, and more.  Bargain-basement PCs come with much more basic software at best.

Bottom line: You certainly don't need to splurge on a system in the Mac's price range to be a happy computer user. But with computers, as with most things in life, you generally get what you pay for.

Selection

The best thing by far about Windows PCs is the sheer unending variety of choices. They come in every size from teeny-tiny to extra-large. There are boxes with touchscreens, Blu-Ray players for high-definition movies, and TV tuners that let you watch and record cable and satellite TV. You can buy a PC that's pink, or transparent, or designed to be as close to indestructible as possible.

Apple, meanwhile, makes Macs in nine basic variants: the basic MacBook laptop, the MacBook Pro laptop in 13″, 15″, and 17″ models, the MacBook Air ultraportable, the Mac Mini microdesktop, the iMac all-in-one desktop in 21.5″ and 27″ models, and the Mac Pro power desktop. And the company doesn't do Blu-Ray, TV tuners, touchscreens, and other features that are commonplace in the Windows world. In short, getting a Mac requires that you buy into one company's take on what's important.

Operating systems

From early 2007 until late 2009, Microsoft's operating system was Windows Vista. It was short on fixes for long-standing Windows annoyances, and often sluggish and crashy even when pre-installed on new PCs. It was a powerful argument in favor of buying a Mac — especially since OS X, Apple's operating system, was (and is) a slick piece of software that stays out of your face rather than complicating your life.

In October of last year, however, Microsoft shipped Windows 7, the solid upgrade to Windows XP that Vista never was. OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard remains more consistent, and less quirky, and some PC makers muck up Windows 7 by larding it up with demoware, adware, and other irritating extras. But the gap between Apple and Microsoft's offerings is as small as it's ever been. If you're a basically content Windows XP user, you've got less reason than before to contemplate switching to a Mac when you buy a new system.

Security

The vast majority of the world's hackers spend the vast majority of their time making trouble for the vast majority of computer users. That's why almost all known viruses, trojan horses, and other malicious applications attack only Windows PCs. Including really dangerous ones that can steal your credit-card and banking information. Recent releases of Windows security suites such as Norton Internet Security are pleasanter to use than their predecessors, but they're still not exactly entertaining.

Buying a Mac doesn't let you simply opt out of worrying about computer safety, however. For one thing, Mac owners are equally vulnerable to the growing number of threats that target social networks and other online venues, not Windows-based computers. Still, a Mac owner who runs no security software is vastly less likely to be the victim of a successful attack than a Windows user who's protected up to his eyeballs.

Service

The best time to think about whether a computer company builds reliable machines and backs them well is before you plunk down any money, not after something goes wrong. No manufacturer ships defect-free systems or makes every customer happy: At the moment, for instance, Apple is dealing with widespread complaints about faulty iMac screens.

Even so, the company has a more consistent reliability and service record than any of its Windows-centric rivals, as shown by surveys conducted by both PC World and PCMag.com. Check out these studies for invaluable real-world data before you buy from any major company.

The best thing of all about the PC-or-Mac decision?

Despite what impassioned partisans may contend, it's not a big, existential question. Whether you buy a Windows system or a Mac, you'll find that the Web is the Web, that good software (much of it free) is plentiful, and that printers, cameras and nearly all other hardware work fine. Hey, they're just computers, folks — and the only thing that really matters is choosing one that fits your needs, taste and budget.

iPad: What you want vs. What you Need

The iPad tablet. It revolutionized tablet computers and the tablet market by the very fact of showing up when it did. In the ipad, and the ipad 2 (sometimes called the ipad 2.0), Apple has been able to dominate the tablet market, setting the standard and staying ahead of the pack in world wide sales. Everyone else is left playing catch up. 

There have been two iPads to hit the market since introduction in April of 2010, the original iPad, (now referred to as the iPad1) and the iPad2, introduced in 2011. Both version come with an online ipad apps store, where applications, approved by Apple, can be bought and downloaded directly to your I pad. Rumors of an impending ipad 3 started the second the iPad 2 was released. 

There are two models of the ipad available, both ipads are Wi-Fi or wireless capable, and one is 3G capable. Ipad 2 reviews have been overall very favorable, with the usual shake out glitches and problems that Apple had to fix through upgrades of patches.

Which iPad should you buy?

It really depends on which one you need.
Here's the most recent specs for the iPad:

Storage comes in several sizes, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB for both models
3G Carriers for the iPad are AT&T and Verizon, with a possible pick up by T-Mobile in 2012. The iPad price starts at 499.00 for the bare bones model and goes up from there.

What do you plan to use it for?

What will be you uses for your iPad? WEe know that once you get it you may find uses for it that you hadn't planned, but what are your current uses? Make a list of you needs, what you absolutely have to have in a tablet or iPad, and what you would want. Also, what can you afford? Might a new ipad met these goals? Of maybe a used or refurbished model might work just as well. Before hitting the Apple store, check Craig's List or eBay, or reliable resellers that might have used of refurbished iPads, if that will suit you needs.

Wireless vs 3G

If you plan to use your iPad in spaces where there is a reliable wifi service, you may not need the added expense of 3G. Free wifi is not hard to find, and can led to a 200 dollar saving. Also, to use the 3G feature, you'll need to sign up with a carrier, if you haven't already. This is will an added expense.

The cons are, if you are away from home, you do have to rely on other, maybe less reliable wireless, and you may not be able to find a wireless signal when you need one. 

With 3G, you have the added expense of signing up at a fee, and other fees may go on top of that, depending on your plan and usage. Carriers are limited at the moment to AT&T and Verizon, but could be expanding in the near future. The biggest advantage is not having to hunt for a wireless hotspot, and having a reliable system to use. Drawbacks include cost for the service, and the problem of not enough bars. If you also have wireless capability, you can switch to that if your 3G signal is weak. 

To summarize: What do you need, what do you want, and what can you afford? Before hitting the Apple Store, do your homework, decided yout needs ad what you can live with.

Top Six Ways to Stay Secure on Public Wi-Fi Networks


There are several precautions you can take to keep your data private while on a Wi-Fi network.

How to Set Up a Home Network

Connect your devices and create a secure home network with these simple steps.

Setting up a home network used to be a task that struck fear in the heart of the most fearless DIY techie. Not anymore. Technology might be getting more complex, but using it becomes simpler with every innovation, making it easy to handle on your own.

First, have the right equipment
Before starting the setup process, it’s a good idea to know what the key components of your wireless home network are and what they do. It’s also important to remember that when it comes to the speed of your Internet connection, you’ll only run as fast as the slowest piece of equipment between you and the Internet.

The first such device is the modem, which establishes the connection between your home and your Internet service provider that makes all your emailing, web surfing and picture sharing possible. Keep your mobile device clean


The world is a filthy, filthy place. Just look at your mobile device, and you can see on-screen evidence of what happens when gadgets continually get poked by grubby fingers, pushed against sweaty ears, and parked on tables covered with crumbs and other contaminants. How do you keep your phone or tablet shiny and clean in the face of this onslaught?

Cleanliness is next to gadgetness

Adopting a routine of cleaning your mobile device every day will help. For daily cleaning, apply a microfiber cloth with the minimum possible force to remove dirt and stains. Between cleanings, store the cloth in a bag or other container to prevent it from picking up dirt or other foreign matter along the way, especially as these could scratch the screen when you use the cloth. Replace the microfiber cloth with a new one regularly, to avoid spreading the very stains you're trying to remove. Several companies, such as Alpine Products, offer small microfiber cloths that tuck into a cover and clip onto the device itself, or onto a bag or key ring. Keeping the cloth with your regular gear kit (chargers, cables, extra battery, and the like) will help you stay on top of cleaning.
If your screen has food or other dried-on stains on it, dip a corner of your microfiber cloth into water, and then use this to try and gently moisten and remove the stain. Do not apply water to the screen directly: Drops can easily slip inside your device—and that won’t end well.

Regular cleaning

Once a month, you should clean your devices thoroughly, including each device's screen, ports, and buttons. Such cleaning can extend the effective life of your equipment, but some caution is required.
Many people use cloths soaked in rubbing alcohol to clean their devices. Though this approach can be very effective on glass screens, the alcohol can damage the surface of some plastics, making them look dull. We recommend that you use a cleaning fluid formulated for screen cleaning—such as iKlear and Monster Cable’s ScreenClean—as they won't damage plastics.
Never use abrasive cleaners or cloths; window cleaners; cleaning solvents; or other household cleaners. Most modern device screens are coated with a thin oleophobic coating that repels the oil from your skin, and this coating can easily be damaged.
To clean the headphone port and speaker grilles, use a keyboard vacuum cleaner with a brush head to gently stir up and remove dust and dirt. Don't use a floor vacuum; it has too much suction and may damage your device's sensitive components. Also stay away from air dusters and canned air, which may blow dirt into the device. Headphone sockets are a particular concern here, because they contain a small micro switch that tells the device when the headphones are plugged in. If anything blocks this switch, your headphones won't work. Manufacturers also use water sensors near the headphone socket, so blowing air might push water onto the socket, potentially voiding your warranty. For the same reason, don't use Q-tip-style cotton swabs; in fact, never insert anything into a socket except the plug it was designed to receive.

Cases need cleaning, too

If your device sits in a case, you might assume that it doesn't need cleaning. Not true. All cases have gaps that collect dirt and dust particles, which then work their way between the case and your tablet. These bits of grunge can inflict deep gouges, scratches, and other harmful marks on the back of a device that (as far as you were aware) had never endured unusual abuse. Devices that you carry in a pocket or bag are especially susceptible to this type of damage, as the shifting pressures against them push the bits of dirt around.
You should regularly remove the device from the case and clean the case in much the same way you would the device. Use a soft cloth or small vacuum to get into the corners and crevices of the case, being sure that remove all of the dirt and dust. Replace screen protectors regularly, too, as they peel slightly at the edges over time, and their sticky undersurface acts as a magnet for dirt and dust.
Remember, a clean gadget is a happy gadget; and you want to keep your gadgets happy if you plan to keep using them for years—or at least until your latest two-year contract expires. If you treat your mobile tech well, it should reward you with long and faithful service. Treat it badly, and your buttons will fail, your screen will become dull, and your gadgets will hate you.
