Mozilla Unveils its Firefox OS Developer Preview Phone

Mozilla revealed its Firefox OS Developer Preview Phone on Tuesday. The new operating system is expected to launch sometime this year, and the first screen shots began to spill out last summer. The device itself, apparently dubbed ”Keon” for short, packs relatively light hardware, especially considering the Android powerhouses hitting the market right now, but that might suggest that Firefox OS doesn’t require a lot of firepower under the hood just to perform well.

The Firefox OS Developer Preview phone is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 processor clocked at 1GHz, a 3.5-inch HVGA display, a 3-megapixel camera, 4GB of storage, 512MB of RAM, a microSD card slot for expandable storage, a 1,580mAh battery, GPS, a microUSB port and more. It supports 3G/HSPA 2100MHz/1900MHz/900MHz bands as well as 2G/EDGE 850MHz/900MHz/1800MHz/1900MHz bands. The device will ship unlocked, too.

Firefox hopes the new device will attract developers to create applications for, and experience, its Firefox OS. The phone is still under development, in partnership with Geeksphone and Telefonica, and it’s unclear how much it will cost or when it will officially launch.
