With the continued advancements in smartphone technologies, 8MP cameras have become the new standard for high-end devices. However, there is a crop of smartphones that challenges even digital cameras in terms of pixel count and photo quality.

1. Sony Xperia Z – 13MP
Sony unveiled its first phone with 5-inch screen - Xperia Z - at CES 2013. The smartphone boasts of some other top-of-the-line features as well, such as a 13MP camera and full-HD (1080p) resolution. This device is powered by a 1.5 GHz Qualcomm quad-core processor and runs on Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean). It has 2GB RAM and 16GB onboard memory, though storage can be expanded up to 32GB via microSD card.
Connectivity options in the phone include Bluetooth, NFC and GPS. Sony Xperia Z has anti-shatter glass on front and back. The smartphone is IP55 and IP 57 certified, which means it is water and dust-resistant and, according to the company, can stay submerged in water for up to 30 minutes.
2. Nokia 808 PureView – 41MP
The 808 PureView is the phone with the biggest camera sensor in the industry right now - 41MP! This camera comes with Carl Zeiss optics, Nokia's proprietary PureView imaging technology and Xenon flash. Nokia 808 PureView also has Dolby Headphone Virtualizer and Digital Plus technologies, along with 5.1 Surround Sound.
The device runs on Nokia Belle mobile operating system and has a 4-inch AMOLED touchscreen with ClearBlack Display technology. This phone is powered by a 1.3GHz processor, coupled with 512MB RAM. It has 16GB built-in memory, supports microSD cards and has connectivity options like 2G, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0 and microoUSB 2.0.
3. HTC Titan II – 13MP
HTC's erstwhile flagship Windows Phone 8 smartphone, the Titan II features a 13MP camera with dual LED flash on the back. The device has a 4.7-inch S-LCD screen with 800x480p resolution and pixel density of approximately 200ppi. The device is powered by 1.5GHz processor and comes with 16GB onboard storage. Connectivity options in the device include 2G, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1 and microUSB 2.0. Powered by a 1,730mAh battery, the phone has a 1.3MP front camera.
4. Nokia Lumia 920 – 8.7MP
Nokia unveiled its first Windows Phone 8-powered smartphone with PureView imaging technology, Lumia 920, in September 2012. This phone's 8.7MP camera can take photos and videos under any lighting condition and comes with Optical Image Stabilisation and dual LED flash. Nokia Lumia 920's rear snapper has resolution of 1280x960 pixels and 2.0f aperture. The phone also has a 1.3MP front camera for video calls.
Lumia 920 boasts of a 4.5-inch PureMotion HD+ touchscreen and runs on a dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor. Connectivity options in the phone include Wi-Fi, 4G, 3G, NFC, 2G, Bluetooth 3.0 and microUSB 2.0. Available with 1GB RAM and 2,000mAh battery, the Lumia 920 has internal memory of 32GB but does not support microSD card.
5. Alcatel Scribe X – 12MP
Alcatel showed its Scribe X at CES 2013, featuring a 12MP camera with LED on the back and a 5-inch screen. The display has 1920x1080p resolution and 441ppi pixel density, the highest among smartphones at present (shared with HTC Droid DNA and Alcatel Scribe X).
The Alcatel Scribe X runs on Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) and comes with a 1MP front camera. Connectivity features of this device are 2G, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and microUSB. This device has 4GB internal storage, support for microSD card of 32GB capacity, 1.4GHz quad-core processor and 1GB RAM.
6. Huawei Ascend D2 – 13MP
Huawei Ascend D2 has a 13MP camera with LED flash as well as a 5-inch screen with 1920x1080p resolution and pixel density of 441ppi, the highest among smartphones at present (shared with HTC Droid DNA and Alcatel Scribe X). The device runs on Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) and features 1.5GHz quad-core processor with 2GB RAM.
Connectivity features of Huawei Ascend D2 are Wi-Fi, 2G, 3G, Bluetooth 4.0 and microUSB. Powered by a 3,000mAh battery, the smartphone has a 1.3MP secondary snapper. The phone comes with 32GB of onboard storage, but does not support microSD card for memory expansion.
7. Sony Xperia ion – 12MP
The Xperia ion is an Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich)-powered smartphone with 12MP camera and 4.5-inch LED touchscreen with Mobile Bravia Engine display technology. The device is available with 16GB on-board memory and runs on a 1.5GHz dual-core processor paired with 1GB RAM.
Sony Xperia ion's connectivity features include 2G, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, microUSB and NFC. Other features of the device are 1,900mAh battery and 1.3MP secondary camera.
8. Lenovo IdeaPhone K900 – 13MP
Lenovo displayed its IdeaPhone K900 with a 5.5-inch touchscreen, 13MP camera and an Intel CloverTrail+ chipset (Atom Z2580 dual-core processor clocked at 2GHz) at CES 2013. The IPS display of the device supports full HD (1080p) videos and has pixel density of over 400ppi. Powered by Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean), the smartphone has 16GB of internal storage, with support for microSD card, and 2GB RAM.
The casing of Lenovo IdeaPhone K900 is made of aluminium, which reduces weight of the device as compared to other materials, and has waistline of just 6.9mm. Though lacking 4G connectivity, this GSM smartphone is compatible with 2G and 3G networks and has Wi-Fi.
9. ZTE Grand S – 13MP
ZTE unveiled Grand S with a 13MP rear snapper and a 5-inch full HD screen at Consumer Electronic Show (CES) 2013. This smartphone is only 6.9mm thick, 69mm wide and 142mm tall. The new ZTE Grand S runs on Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) and is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor with 1.7GHz quad-core CPU.
The full-HD smartphone with 1,920 x 1,080p display resolution offers 2GB of RAM and comes with 16GB of internal storage. Powered by a 1,780mAh battery, this device features a 2MP camera in the front and a 13MP auto-focus camera at the back capable of shooting 1080p video.
10. Nokia N8 – 12MP
Nokia N8 - launched in 2010 - is the first phone to tout a 12MP camera, an exclusive feature even now. This camera has Carl Zeiss optics and ND filter and is coupled with Xenon flash. N8 has a 3.5-inch touchscreen with 640x360p resolution and 210ppi pixel density. It runs on a Symbian Belle operating system and is powered by a 680MHz processor with 256MB RAM.
Storage capacity in Nokia N8 is 16GB and it can also accommodate microSD cards with capacity up to 32GB. Connectivity suite of the device consists of standard features like 2G, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0 and microUSB. The phone has a 1,20mAh battery and VGA front snapper.
