Free Linux operating system Ubuntu is heading to smartphones, promising to stick a full power PC right in the palm of your hands – plus a handy docking feature to squeeze even more out of your device when you’re at a desk.
Ubuntu for phones is streamlined enough to run on even the most inexpensive hardware whilst still letting you run apps you’d typically only find on a desktop machine. It’s the docking tech that’s got us interested though: this new Ubuntu release gives phones like the Motorola Atrix a run for its money by turning any phone into a fully powered personal computer that can be power a monitor and keyboard. Just plug in when you’re at home and go in full desktop mode.
Tech trends: The biggest gadget shake ups of 2012
Ubuntu can be easily hacked on to current Android hardware, making it easy for manufacturers to load up their smartphones with the Linux-based OS – that’s a Samsung Galaxy Nexus in the press shots, for instance. Android apps can easily be ported too, meaning your thumbs won’t get bored on the bus anytime soon.
There’s no release date in sight yet, but the project does look extremely interesting for those already tired of all three major phone operating systems. With many computers running the user-friendly flavour of Linux, will a phone version also deliver productivity for its users? Time will tell.
