Nokia’s aluminum body Catwalk allegedly shown in a “secret room” at MWC, impresses audience

Nokia Catwalk with aluminum body coming this year

This year’s MWC might have been a pretty dull affair but it seems a select few actually had the keys to “secret rooms” where they were shown devices not yet globally announced by vendors. Mobile Review’s well-connected Eldar Murtazin claims to have been inside one such room, which happened to be that of Nokia, no less. Murtazin claims that Nokia executives showed them an “aluminum flagship” phone that had a good camera, which sounds familiar to the Nokia EOS aka the Catwalk that was leaked in January.

The EOS was widely expected to be the successor of the Lumia 920 but no one had confirmed seeing the device yet, and all rumors were based on second-hand information. Murtazin is the first person to have seen the device and has written publicly about it. He says that the aluminum casing is premium and left a very good impression on him. Even the camera seems to be good and it would be a popular Lumia smartphone.

However, he believes that the device still won’t do huge volumes as it runs on Windows Phone, which would be the only stumbling block. We expect Nokia to announce the EOS/Catwalk at its annual Nokia World event, which usually happens in September-October timeframe.

Play To arrives to Lumia phones with Windows Phone 8

Nokia has announced that a beta trial of its DLNA streaming app Play To will be available for Windows Phone 8-powered Nokia devices.

Like other such streaming apps, Play To lets you wirelessly share photos, music, and videos to DLNA-enabled devices, including TV’s and receivers.

This is not the first time Play To has been released for Windows Phone, as there is a version for WP7-based Lumia’s with the same basic functionality.

Currently, the Play To beta for WP8 is not able to work as a digital media server, which means that it is not compatible with the PS3, although they do plan to introduce compatibility in a future release. Music streaming is also limited to content which is stored on the device.

Nokia Lumia 520 is here with flashy colors and supersensitive screen

Nokia Lumia 520 is here with flashy colors and supersensitive screen
Nokia got on stage today to announce the Lumia 520, another one in its strategy to go downmarket with the Lumia brand, and bring Windows Phone 8 to the masses.

The Nokia Lumia 520 is the company's cheapest Windows Phone 8 handset, delivering experiences normally only found in high-end smartphones, such as the same digital camera lenses found on the flagship Nokia Lumia 920, Nokia Music for free music out of the box and even offline, and the HERE location suite. A four-inch super sensitive touchscreen makes for a more responsive and immersive content experience than can usually be found at this price.

As for the other specs, we get a 1 GHz dual-core S4 processor, 512 MB of RAM, 8 GB of internal memory and a microSD slot. The 5 MP camera is with f/2.4 aperture, capable of HD 720p video, and has some neat tricks up its sleeve like Cinemagraph and Panorama. The battery is generous 1430 mAh, good for 9 hours of talk time in 3G mode, and 6 hours of Wi-Fi browsing.

The Nokia Lumia 520 comes in five colors, with an estimated starting price of EUR 139 (~$184), before taxes and subsidies. Roll-out is planned to begin in Q1 2013 in Hong Kong and Vietnam, before expanding broadly in Q2 to markets in Europe, Asia - including China and India - Latin America and Africa. The Nokia Lumia 520 is also planned to roll out in the United States with T-Mobile as the Lumia 521.

Nokia to chase the entry-level market as well at MWC, preparing affordable devices to compete with Huawei and ZTE

Nokia is expected to launch a number of entry-level devices including both Windows Phone-based affordable smartphones and feature phones in just a couple of days at Mobile World Congress, according to Reuters. Nokia has allegedly decided to widen its presence in the low range amidst intensifying competition from Chinese manufacturers like Huawei and ZTE.

These rumors come after we have already heard other sources agreeing Nokia will launch a new Windows Phone flagship named Nokia EOS, a device packing the amazing PureView phase one technology that we’ve seen in the Nokia 808 PureView.

The upcoming affordable models will diversify Nokia’s porftolio and show that the company is now ready to look at the bigger picture after two tough transitional years the company spent laser-focused on bringing a competitive Windows Phone flagship.

There are no further details about those upcoming entry-level devices, but we expect even more of the successful Asha feature phone series.

Nokia sold a record 4.4 million Lumia smartphones in the last quarter of 2012, a one bright spot in an otherwise very turbulent Windows Phone ride which has put the company in the red this year. Still, Nokia would need to start much more than that in order to get noticed. Samsung in comparison sold around 50 million smartphones in Q4 2012 and Apple sold a whopping 48 million of its high-margin iPhone.

Nokia to take aim at the cheap seats with MWC Lumia quartet

Nokia’s focus at the upcoming MWC 2013 in Barcelona is to be upon a range of cheaper Lumia smartphones, according to news reports on Reuters today. Company sources told the news agency that the aim is to fend off low-end Chinese rivals from the likes of ZTE and Huawei. Also there are huge volumes of sales to be made at this lower end of the market for a well balanced product.

The Reuters report is a little unclear as to what will be launched: “...sources said Nokia will introduce cut-price mobile phones aimed at competing with the likes of Huawei and ZTE, as well as a new, lower-price model of its Lumia smartphones running on Windows Phone 8 software.” To me this sounds like just one new WP8 smartphone will be released at the budget end of the market, the rest will presumably be WP7.8 models.

The Nokia Lumia 620 has only recently become available and has been doing exceedingly well as far as reviews and accolades go. It was available last week for £119 from O2, while the price is higher now, but it will probably dip again. It’s hard to see where Nokia will fit in some more cheap smartphones. Industry watchers are still waiting to see a Lumia 720 be released into the range but that will be expected, logically, to fit between the 620 and 820. So it seems like we should therefore see an update to the Lumia 5XX series in the shape of a Lumia 520 at MWC. C-net thinks we will see a Lumia 720, 520 and two other models at the imminent Spanish mobile tech show. Today’s Reuters report confirms the extra handsets will be at the budget end.

Brazil and Pakistan open doors to WP8 Lumia range

Cheaper phones are very important to most handset makers, even though the segment seems to be ignored by Apple. Two more large developing markets have just opened up to Nokia’s latest WP8 offerings. The Nokia Lumia 920, Lumia 820 and Lumia 620 were launched in Brazil this week. The same WP8 trio arrived in Pakistan, also during this last week.

Nokia Lumia 820 design competition
The Lumia range comes in a pretty snazzy selection of solid colours but Nokia has been fishing for some eye catching designs from young and emerging designers to turn up the attractiveness knob on its Lumia 820 smartphone. That’s its second most expensive model. The top three designs will be available in very limited quantities, just 50 of each. Here’s a video showing the best entries.

Nokia Lumia 920 replaces BlackBerry in Mall of America

Nokia Lumia 920 replaces BlackBerry in Mall of America
Largest retail and entertainment complex in the US makes switch due to close integration with Microsoft services.

Mall of America, the US’ largest retail and entertainment complex, is to provide its management team with Nokia Lumia 920s, having previously provided its staff with BlackBerry devices.

The switch was made on account of the device’s tight integration with Microsoft services and Microsoft Office suite.

It was also announced earlier this week that Foxtons had struck a business deal with Nokia to provide around 900 employees with Lumia 820 handsets.

Built on the Microsoft Windows Phone 8 platform, the Lumia 920 allows out-of-the-box access to Microsoft apps and services, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and SkyDrive.

These apps integrate with the mall's existing Microsoft services, enabling Mall of America’s management team to review and edit Outlook emails and Microsoft Office documents on the go via their smartphones.

"Switching to the Nokia Lumia 920 has increased productivity for key team members. The combination of a great smartphone with built-in Microsoft Office suite enables our team to work collaboratively, and SkyDrive ensures we can back up and access our work, wherever we are and whenever we want," said Janette Smrcka, IT director at Mall of America.

"With more than 400 events every year, from music acts to celebrity book signings, the ability to capture, edit and share images from the Nokia Lumia 920's PureView camera enables team members to provide instant high-quality imagery and real time updates to social media fans and our business customers. When you combine this with all of the Windows Phone 8 platform's business capabilities, at a price we can afford, we've got a device we're really proud to use," she added.

The Nokia Lumia 920's Live Tiles is designed to offer intelligent, interactive apps, displaying the latest emails, news, documents and people updates as and when they happen. Meanwhile the People Hub in Windows Phone 8 helps organise teams, allowing staff to set-up groups and stay in touch with co-workers across text, Facebook, Twitter, instant messaging and email.
"Mall of America is a great example of how all the business features of the Nokia Lumia 920, combined with its social capabilities, can make a great work device," said Stephanie Mosticchio, enterprise sales manager for North America at Nokia. "The Windows Phone 8 platform has meant the company's employees have been able to transition quickly, due to its built-in and familiar Microsoft Outlook and Office Mobile applications. From the intuitive integration with Microsoft services, to Live Tiles and People Hub making it easy to stay close to what matters, all wrapped in the beautiful polycarbonate body of the Nokia Lumia 920, it offers everything a mobile workforce could ask for."
